Equipment Introduction

Straw crushers are mechanical devices that process plant straw (such as corn stalks, wheat straw, cotton stalks, etc.) into finely shredded materials through high-speed cutting, impact, and airflow grinding. They are core equipment in mechanized agricultural production and comprehensive utilization of biomass resources. They aim to solve the problems of large volume, difficulty in composting, and difficulty in transporting crop straw, transforming it into a usable resource.

Based on the method of movement, they can be divided into stationary and mobile types; based on structure, they can be divided into hammer mill type, chopping type, and disc type.

Structural Components of the Equipment

The straw crusher mainly consists of the following six mechanisms:

1. Feeding Mechanism: Primarily composed of a feeding platform, upper and lower rollers, fixed blades, and fixed blade support, responsible for evenly feeding the material into the crushing chamber. Some models have rotating claws at the feed inlet, which can automatically grab the material into the crushing bin.

2. Chopping and Crushing Mechanism: Primarily composed of moving blades, cutter disc, hammers, rotor, and locking screws. The hammers are symmetrically arranged on the rotor disc. After entering the crushing chamber, the material is crushed by the impact of the high-speed rotating hammers and the friction of the screen plate. Some models also have a kneading shell and a crushing shell. The material is first cut into segments by the cutter in the kneading shell, and then further crushed by the hammers and racks in the crushing shell.

3. Screening Mechanism: Primarily composed of screens (screen plates), located below the main shaft and opposite the discharge port. Different fineness of finished products can be obtained by installing screen plates with different aperture sizes. 4. Transmission Mechanism: Mainly composed of V-belts, drive shafts, gears, universal joints, etc., responsible for transmitting power to all working parts.

5. Travel Mechanism: Mainly composed of casters for easy equipment movement.

6. Frame and Protective Devices: The machine casing is welded from high-quality steel, with the feed inlet located at the top of the crusher; the protective devices consist of a protective cover to ensure operational safety.

In addition, some models are equipped with a fan and a discharge pipe for conveying and discharging the crushed material.

Working Principle of the Equipment

The straw crusher adopts a composite crushing mechanism of "cutting + hammering + grinding." The working process is as follows:

1. Feeding: Straw enters the crushing chamber through the feed inlet (or automatic conveyor chain). The feeding speed and continuity directly affect the production capacity.

2. Cutting: Long strips of straw are first cut into short segments by a combination of fixed and moving blades.

3. Hammering: High-speed rotating hammers (typically 1800–3540 r/min) strongly impact, tear, and rub the material.

4. Screening and Discharge: The crushed material passes through a screen under centrifugal force. Qualified fine powder is sucked away by the negative pressure of the fan and discharged through the centrifugal discharger; unqualified coarse material continues to circulate and crush within the chamber.

5. Collection and Conveying: The crushed material is transferred to subsequent processes or a collection bin via a conveying device. Special model principle: Disc cutter + hammer blade combination type (such as 9FQM1000 model): coarse branches are first cut into 6mm thin slices by the disc cutter, and then enter the crushing chamber where they are crushed into 5-25mm fragments by the hammer blades, realizing dual-channel processing of coarse and fine materials.

Applications of the Equipment

Straw crushers have a wide range of applications:

1. Feed Processing: Crushing corn stalks, wheat straw, rice straw, peanut vines, sweet potato vines, etc., into roughage or concentrates for feeding ruminants such as cattle and sheep;

2. Organic Fertilizer Production: As a front-end device in organic fertilizer production lines, crushed straw is mixed with livestock and poultry manure for fermentation;

3. Biomass Energy: The crushed material can be pressed into biomass pellet fuel for power generation or heating;

4. Edible Fungus Cultivation: Crushed straw and sawdust can be used as raw materials for edible fungi (such as mushrooms) culture media;

5. Industrial Raw Materials: Used in the production of particleboard, paper, straw-based panels, straw charcoal, MDF, etc.;

6. Field Return: Straw crushers can directly crush crop straw and return it to the field to improve soil.

Raw Material Requirements for the Equipment

The straw crusher can process the following types of raw materials:

Raw Material Category Specific Materials
Gramineae Straw Corn straw, wheat straw, rice straw, sorghum stalk, millet straw
Leguminous Straw Soybean stalk, peanut vine, sweet potato vine, bean straw
Cotton & Bast Fiber Straw Cotton stalk, hemp stalk, chili vine
Wood Fiber Branches, leaves, bark, wood scraps, sawdust
Other Materials Green and dry weeds, soybean cake, rice husk, bagasse, garden waste

Raw Material Requirements:

1. Moisture Content: Generally ≤10%–15% (some models can handle materials with higher moisture content);

2. Feed Size: Depending on the model, whole bundles or branches with a diameter of 1–20 cm can be directly fed in;

3. Impurity Control: Avoid mixing in hard objects such as stones and metal to prevent damage to the blades.

Equipment Operation and Maintenance Methods

1. No-load Start: After starting, observe whether the rotation direction is correct. Feeding can only begin after the speed stabilizes.

2. Uniform Feeding: Feeding hard objects such as iron blocks, stones, and wood blocks is strictly prohibited to prevent damage to the blades or penetration of the machine casing.

3. Lubrication and Maintenance: Add grease to the bearings every 8-10 hours of operation; regularly check the belt tension.

4. Wear Inspection: Regularly check the wear condition of the hammer blades. If one end is worn, it can be turned around for use. If severely worn, the entire set should be replaced to prevent vibration.

Application of equipment in production lines

In organic fertilizer and biomass pellet production lines, straw crushers are usually located in the raw material pretreatment section:

Straw collection → Pretreatment (cutting/flattening) → [Straw crusher] → Ingredient mixing → Fermentation/granulation → Finished product

Core role:

1. Particle size control: crush the long straw to 1-50mm (or finer) to meet the particle size requirements for subsequent fermentation or granulation;

2. Increase in specific surface area: The specific surface area of the material after crushing is significantly increased, which is beneficial to microbial decomposition and fermentation reactions;

3. Mixing uniformity: Fine powdery materials are mixed more evenly with livestock and poultry manure, fungi and other auxiliary materials to improve fermentation efficiency;

4. Suitable for multiple processes: The crushed straw can be directly used in various downstream processes such as feed processing, organic fertilizer fermentation, and biomass pellet pressing.
Common Equipment Problems and Solutions

Fault Classification Fault Phenomenon Causes Solutions
Crushing Quality Problem Poor crushing quality Too fast feeding speed Use gear 3 of the tractor
High ground clearance of machine Adjust support arm hole position or adjust pull rod length
